THE FIRST EDITION OF THE TRANSFORMERS! PROJECT TOOK PLACE FROM THE 26TH OF APRIL TO THE 9TH OF MAY, 2013 AND TOOK PLACE IN BERLIN.
TRANSFORMERS! is a two-week training experience in which 24 young people from 6 different cities are brought together in respectively Amsterdam, Paris, Rabat, Istanbul, Cairo and Berlin. It is these six cities the 24 participants come from. Four from every city. The participants are aged between 18 and 23 years old, and live in so-called deprived neighborhoods. Inspired by the Arab spring, they experimented with new forms of political participation and civic engagement to fight problems in their neighborhood. They are trained in skills of creative activism and digital communication by young experts, who have played an active role in movements like Occupy, and the Arab spring.
In the first edition in Berlin the 24 participants discovered their own potential to become a community leader. By imagining themselves as local super heroes, they worked on their self-esteem and discovered their own special powers, but also became aware of their weaknesses and the benefits of cooperation with others. After the exchange, all participants organized an activity in their own neighborhood, in which they brought their newly trained skills into practice.
The first edition was a success, even though the program was still being developed. The Transformers! team and the participants learned though, that a good atmosphere between the participants is very important. A good atmosphere was present in Berlin and several participants from the first edition will help in developing next years’ program and scout and supervise the participants coming to Amsterdam.
